New EU regulation on organic farming

The new EU organic regulation will enter into force on 1 January 2022 following the postponement of its implementation for a year due to the covid emergency.

Its aim is “to ensure fair competition for farmers, whilst preventing fraud and maintaining consumer trust”.

In particular, production rules will be simplified, the control system will be tightened, third country producers will have to comply with the same standards as those operating in the EU, organic product standards will cover a wider list of products, certification will be easier for small farmers, and the risk of accidental pesticide contamination will be reduced.

In short, a necessary adjustment for an exponentially growing sector.
